Elizabeth Juarez
roadkill hat
Coyote, fox, rabbit roadkill pelts, linen, steel wire, adhesive
2025
This wearable sculpture is an examination of sudden impact and what one does with what remains. Using roadkill as material, Juarez sewed together a functional hat that, although portrayed in a cute manner, is gruesome in nature.
The work parallels her lived experience as a petite woman who has endured a life marked by trauma. Like the roadkill, life has come at Juarez quickly and forcefully, leaving her with fragments. Through this sculpture, she chooses to reconstruct those pieces, transforming them into something greater than the sum of their parts.
